The Issue

Growing up, I have noticed just how much we rely on screens for both work and entertainment. The sudden shift to digital platforms has been overwhelming. It's not just me experiencing this. My younger brother is also affected, and I am genuinely concerned for our well-being. We need a balanced lifestyle that genuinely connects us to the world around us and not just through screens. As a part of my PYP grade, I am advocating for a significant change that could benefit many families just like mine.

Excessive screen time is linked to various health issues, including eye strain, sleep disturbances, and reduced physical activity. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children should not have more than one to two hours of screen time per day, and adults should also be conscious of their usage. What if we aimed even lower?

Reducing our screen time to just 60 minutes per week might be extreme for some, but imagine the quality of interactions and experiences we could gain. Studies have indicated that limited screen time not only alleviates health problems but also encourages people to engage more in physical activities, nurture hobbies, and build stronger relationships. This campaign is aimed at creating communities that thrive on real-world experiences rather than virtual engagements.

This initiative starts with us! I propose that we challenge ourselves and our communities to restrict weekly screen time to just 60 minutes. We could implement this through community activities, awareness programs in schools, and family challenges that encourage outdoor play and creativity.

Please join me in taking the first step towards a healthier and more engaged lifestyle. With your signature, we can show that people are willing to adopt healthier habits, inspiring change not just on a local level but globally. Let's work together to create a balanced environment for our families and especially for the younger generation who are growing up in this digital age.
