Limit the Public Release of Mugshots in New Jersey

The Issue

Throughout the United States, mugshots of individuals arrested are frequently made public, often causing significant harm and distress to the people involved, regardless if they are ultimately found innocent. New Jersey is not an exception. These publicly released mugshots can lead to a serious violation of privacy rights, causing the accused grave consequences in their social and professional lives. This model of publishing mugshots publicly initially began as a transparency measure, but it is now frequently misused, serving more as public shaming than public service. According to a study by Stanford University, public mugshots do little to help reduce crime rates. We call on the New Jersey Legislature to enact legislation that restricts the public release of these mugshots until an individual is proven guilty. This is a necessary step to uphold the principle of 'innocent until proven guilty', ensuring fairness and respect to the rights of individuals. We urge you to stand for privacy rights and support this reformation. Sign the petition today.
