Limit online shopping to save malls and small businesses

The Issue

Growing up, we always went to the mall or other retailers to do our shopping. We would meet up with friends, get exercise, and have a ton of fun! It created opportunities for socialization, especially for young adults and teenagers, far beyond what texting or using electronic devices can offer. The memories created during those times remain with us for a lifetime.

In recent years, however, malls and small businesses have been facing significant challenges due to the overwhelming rise of online shopping. Many beloved brick-and-mortar stores are closing their doors because they simply cannot compete with the convenience and often cheaper prices of online giants. This shift not only threatens the vibrancy of our local communities but also the economy as a whole, as small businesses are integral to job creation and sustaining local economies.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses provide jobs for over 58 million people – nearly half of the workforce in the United States. Furthermore, a report from the International Council of Shopping Centers highlights that malls contribute significantly to local economies by generating substantial tax revenue and hosting community events.

To preserve these vital community hubs and support small businesses, we need to advocate for policies that balance the growth of e-commerce with the sustainability of physical retail stores. Possible solutions include implementing local sales tax parity, offering incentives for shopping in-store, and strengthening small business support programs.

By signing this petition, you are supporting the preservation of malls and small retailers as essential parts of our communities and cultures. Together, we can ensure future generations experience the joy, connection, and memories that come from shopping in person. Let's work to create a thriving environment for both online and physical retailers, ensuring a balanced and fair marketplace. Please sign this petition to help save our malls and small businesses.
