Limit Landing Fees at CYOO

Limit Landing Fees at CYOO
The Issue
The City of Oshawa imposes a $15 landing fee for every arriving aircraft at CYOO. While landing fees are an effective tool to collect revenue for supporting airport infrastructure, they disproportionately affect student pilots. Thus, Oshawa's aviation community is calling on municipal regulators to limit landing fees for aircraft involved in flight training activities.
A key component of flight training is learning to fly circuit patterns. These involve orbiting the airspace in order to practice safety procedures, aircraft configuration, landings, and takeoffs. In a single circuit session one airplane might land 5 times. An hour of flight instruction and airplane rental can cost more than $300, and the final bill often exceeds $400 once landing fees are applied. This severely increases the financial strain of learning to fly, and disincentivizes students from supporting local businesses.
CYOO has become a hub for flight education, and Oshawa has a reputation for training quality aviators. Facing an industry-wide pilot shortage, these students represent the next generation of aviation professionals, and they deserve our support so that Oshawa's aviation community can flourish for many years to come.
