Limit indoor venue music sound levels to 85 decibels
The Issue
We've been to indoor venues with live and recorded music, and the sound level has been as high as 100 decibels. The experience was not just uncomfortable, but concerning for our health. Industry standards, such as OSHA 1910.95 Occupational noise exposure, require hearing protection for sound levels above 85 decibels. In these venues, guests and employees are exposed to potentially harmful noise levels without adequate protection or the possibility to control the environment.
When sound levels exceed 85 decibels, it can negatively impact hearing health. Prolonged exposure to such noise levels can lead to hearing loss and other health issues like stress and hypertension. This is not only a risk faced by musicians and staff, but also by patrons who come to enjoy dining or entertainment.
Currently, this regulation is mandatory for employers in environments where noise exceeds recommended safety levels, yet no similar regulation exists to protect customers at bars and restaurants. Implementing a sound level limit in these venues is essential to safeguard everyone's hearing.
We urge regulatory bodies to enforce a maximum sound level limit of 85 decibels in all indoor venues, including restaurants and bars playing live or recorded music. This measure will promote a safer, more enjoyable experience for all individuals. It is a practical and necessary step to align with existing standards and ensure public health safety.
Sign this petition to insist that our shared spaces prioritize our auditory health, making them safer and more comfortable. Join us in creating healthier environments for everyone.
