The Issue

Our community in Ontario, California, has been living in constant fear due to the actions of I.C.E. (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) officials who have been utilizing city owned properties like parks, libraries, parking lots, and community centers for staging operations, processing, and detaining individuals. This has affected us deeply, tearing families apart and instilling fear in our Latino-majority community, including my school, Chaffey High School. Aswell as surrounding school in nearby cities and across states.

The presence of I.C.E. in these public spaces, places meant for community gathering and personal growth, has created an environment of anxiety and distress. Our community feels under siege, unable to enjoy the comfort and safety of what should be welcoming communal areas. This misuse of city resources for enforcement operations not only violates our rights but also contradicts the values of diversity and inclusion that Ontario, California, strives to uphold.

Statistics indicate that the Latino community has been disproportionately targeted by such operations, and this racial profiling only serves to perpetuate systemic injustice. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Latinos make up approximately 70% of Ontario's population, yet they face the brunt of these aggressive tactics.

I.C.E.'s activities often lack transparency and do not always adhere to constitutional rights, leading to wrongful detentions and the tearing apart of families. Such actions are not in line with the principles of justice and fairness.

We demand actionable changes. The city council should implement policies that limit the use of city owned or controlled properties by I.C.E. for such operations. Establishing clear guidelines and seeking community input in these decisions will ensure that the rights and dignities of all residents are respected.

Furthermore, we urge community leaders and local officials to engage actively with federal authorities to ensure that any enforcement actions conducted within our city limits are done so with respect for human rights and dignity. Providing know-your-rights training and resources to our citizens will also empower them to protect themselves safely and effectively.

Let us make Ontario a safe haven for all its residents, where diversity is celebrated, and every individual can feel secure in their own home. Sign this petition to urge our leaders to make a stand against the misuse of city resources and to protect the rights and safety of our community. Together, we can drive change and create a more inclusive and just Ontario, California for everyone.
