Limit each region 6 hunting districts to only 50 antlered mule deer permits.

The Issue

The winter of 2022/23 was a harsh one on Montanas Hiline. Sportsmen and women, along with landowners, have noticed a significant decrease in the mule deer buck population. This decrease is believed to be due to the severe weather conditions combined with an increase in hunting pressure. As someone deeply concerned about this issue, I am calling on the state of Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks to address this problem urgently.

Mule deer are an essential part of our ecosystem and local culture. They contribute significantly to biodiversity and are a vital resource for many residents who rely on hunting for sustenance or as part of their livelihoods. However, overharvestin can lead to drastic reductions in herd quality and age; which could take years or even decades to recover.

Therefore, we propose that the number of either sex mule deer permits issued per 600 district be limited to only 50 for a term of five years. This limitation will allow time for the mule deer population to recover, and mature while still permitting regulated hunting activities for antlerless mule deer.

We understand that managing wildlife populations is complex and requires balancing various interests. However, it is crucial that we prioritize sustainable practices that ensure future generations can also enjoy these magnificent creatures.

Please join us by signing this petition urging the state authorities responsible for wildlife management in Montana's District 600 area – specifically Glasgow, Malta, and Havre –to enforce stricter regulations on mule deer hunting permits over the next five years.
