Limit Chickens in Avoca and Lazerne county, PA to 6 Per Household

Limit Chickens in Avoca and Lazerne county, PA to 6 Per Household
The Issue
Growing up in Tunkhannock, I experienced firsthand the joys and educational opportunities that raising chickens can bring. I want the same for my family here in Avoca, PA. It's not just about collecting fresh eggs; it's also a chance for my children, Mikey and Jason, to understand where their food comes from and learn responsibility. Mikey is four, and my youngest, Jason, who is two, is on the autistic spectrum. He's often soothed by the gentle clucking of our chickens, and they help keep pest bugs at bay naturally.
However, the absence of a clear regulation regarding the number of chickens per household in Lazerne county could hinder these benefits. Overpopulation of chickens in residential areas can lead to noise disturbances and sanitation issues, especially if roosters are included. That's why I'm urging the directors of Lucerne to establish a reasonable cap of six chickens per household in avoca, and to prohibit roosters entirely in residential areas.
Implementing these limits would foster a balanced environment for families who wish to raise chickens responsibly, while ensuring neighbors maintain their peace and clean surroundings. Several towns across the U.S. have successfully adopted similar regulations, finding a harmonious balance between urban living and agriculturally inspired hobbies.
Let's come together to support a healthier, more inclusive community policy that allows for small-scale chicken-keeping, benefiting both the families involved and their surrounding neighbors. I invite you to join me in urging the directors of Lucerne County to adopt these changes, striking a balance that works for everyone involved.
