Lift the Spotify ban in our school district

The Issue

Banning Spotify in our schools is a shortsighted and harmful policy that hurts students far more than it helps.

For many young people, especially those with ADHD, autism, anxiety, and other neurodivergent conditions, music is not a luxury but a vital lifeline that helps them focus, reduce overwhelming stress, and regulate their emotions in noisy or chaotic school environments. Removing this tool does not create better classrooms; it drives students toward far more distracting platforms like TikTok and YouTube, increases phone misuse, and pushes them toward risky, insecure websites and VPNs that threaten the entire school network.

Beyond academic and emotional damage, this blanket ban violates federal law. Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, schools must provide reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Denying music as a necessary support exposes the district to serious legal action, costly lawsuits, federal investigations, and potential loss of funding resources that should be spent in classrooms, not courtrooms.

Our students deserve compassionate, effective leadership, not outdated prohibitions that treat them like prisoners instead of preparing them for the real world. We urge the school board to immediately lift the Spotify ban and replace it with responsible, flexible guidelines that support learning, protect neurodivergent students, and respect federal law.
