Lift the Hiring Freeze on Civil Service Jobs in New York City

The Issue

I, along with many others I know, are currently on Civil Service job lists and eagerly awaiting to be called. The New York City Mayor’s Office has implemented a hiring freeze across all City agencies, leaving us in a state of uncertainty and frustration. This decision is based on the anticipation of federal funding that may never materialize due to the ongoing asylum seeker crisis.

The Governor had promised $2.4 billion in funding for our city. This hiring freeze not only affects us as individuals but also impacts the efficient functioning of our city's public services.

According to data from NYC Open Data, there are over 300,000 civil service employees in New York City (source: NYC Open Data). Each one of these jobs represents an essential role within our community - from sanitation workers keeping our streets clean to social workers providing vital support to those most vulnerable.

By freezing these positions, we're not just stalling individual careers; we're hindering progress and growth within our beloved city. We urge the Mayor’s Office and other relevant authorities to lift this hiring freeze immediately so that we can continue serving New Yorkers effectively.
