Lift the Ban on Phones in Middle and High Schools in Ann Arbor

Lift the Ban on Phones in Middle and High Schools in Ann Arbor
The Issue
As a student who has had their phone confiscated four times for simply checking messages from my parents, I understand the frustration and inconvenience that this ban imposes. It's not just about staying connected with friends, it's about maintaining important lines of communication with our families.
In today's digital age, phones have become an essential tool for learning and communication. They provide access to educational resources, enable quick research, and allow students to stay connected with their families during school hours. The American Psychological Association even acknowledges that moderate use of technology can offer educational benefits.
However, middle schools and high schools in Ann Arbor currently enforce a strict no-phone policy. This policy is outdated and does not reflect our evolving learning environment or respect our need for family communication during school hours.
We are calling on the Ann Arbor School District to reconsider this policy. We propose a more flexible approach that allows responsible phone usage during breaks or emergencies while maintaining academic integrity during class hours.
Please sign this petition if you believe in updating these rules to better serve students' needs while still prioritizing education. Let us use technology as an ally rather than viewing it as an enemy.
