Lift The Ban On Phones (House Bill 1481)

The Issue

On June 20, 2025, Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 1481 into law. Placing all schools across every school district in Texas under a ban that makes Cell phones,Tablets, Smartwatches, Headphones, earbuds, Gaming devices, Radios and pagers, and any other electronic device capable of telecommunication or digital communication illegal to have or use in school. We believe that this is unjust of the government to do to us, as there are countless parents and students that work hard to even be able to pay for a phone. Adding to this, many parents have even come to voice their opinions on the ban, with people online saying “They’ll ban phones but won’t do a thing about protecting kids from school shootings"(El Paso Times). Another user online explaining “Can we take a moment to think about 10-year-old Uvalde Robb Elementary 4th grader, Khloie Torres who made multiple calls to 911 during the shooting"(El Paso Times). Even as the government hears our concerns, they disregard it as a need for the safety of schools.

The new Texas law banning phones in schools is unfair and unsafe because it takes away the right that students and parents pay for. Families spend their money on phones so that their children can stay in contact and safe, and the government should not have the power to completely restrict that. Some may see them as distractions, but they are important for communication, especially in emergencies. If something dangerous happens, students should be able to call or text their parents immediately, and not have to worry about it being confiscated by a teacher or AP. By banning the use of phones completely, the law looks past the sacrifices families make and puts students at risk when they should have the freedom and safety that comes with being able to contact their parents.

If you want to be able and have the freedom to use your phone in school without there being a negative consequence, join us in this social movement to lift House Bill 1481, to bring back phones in our Texas schools. What if there is ever an emergency and nobody can get ahold of you because you don’t have your phone ? What would you do then ? In school, there are situations that we do need our phone, but we’re not allowed to take them out. So I ask of you to join this movement and gain back the freedom to use your phone in school.
