The Issue

Denver Public Schools are implementing a ban on phones and MacBooks across all schools, a decision that has significant implications for students, parents, and teachers alike. While the intention behind this ban may be to minimize distractions and enhance focus, it inadvertently hampers the learning experience and technological proficiency of students in today's digital age.

The 21st century is characterized by rapid technological advancement, and digital literacy has become an essential skill for success. According to the Pew Research Center, approximately 95% of teenagers have access to a smartphone, while the World Economic Forum reports that digital skills are crucial for 90% of future careers. By banning these devices, Denver Public Schools may unintentionally hinder students' ability to develop necessary digital skills and adapt to modern educational environments.

Moreover, phones and MacBooks serve as valuable educational tools. They provide access to a wealth of online resources, foster communication and collaboration through educational apps, and offer opportunities for personalized learning. According to a 2020 study by the Consortium for School Networking, schools that integrate technology into classrooms see an improvement in student engagement, motivation, and overall learning outcomes.

Phones aswell are necessary for students to feel safe and comfortable in school. Whereas without phones being able to be used during class, emergency situations will cause a long and tiring process and people may not have that time.

Additionally, for students with special needs, devices such as smartphones and MacBooks offer accessibility features that are indispensable for learning. For example, text-to-speech software and visual organization tools can make a significant difference in the educational experience of these students.

Instead of a blanket ban, we propose that Denver Public Schools implement policies that promote responsible and educational use of technology. This could include workshops on digital citizenship, guidelines for appropriate device use during school hours, and parent-teacher collaboration to ensure students’ digital activities are supervised and constructive.

By lifting the ban and fostering a more inclusive and technologically adept educational environment, we can better equip our students for the challenges of the future. Join us in urging Denver Public Schools to reconsider this policy and focus on responsible technology integration.
