LIFT THE AGE LIMIT FOR THE FDNY FIRE PROMOTIONAL EXAM FOR FDNY EMPLOYEES
The Issue
This petition calls for the age limit for the open Competitive FIREFIGHTER Exam to be raised from 29 to age 36 and the age limit for the FDNY Employees FIREFIGHTER PROMOTIONAL EXAM to be Removed since it is a promotion to the RANK of FIREFIGHTER for those who work in FDNY EMS as both EMT and Paramedics Fire Protection inspector and FDNY Fire Dispatchers.EMS was merged into the FDNY in the year 1996 from New york Health and Hospital to FDNY on march 17 1996.Since the merger the FDNY has allowed members of EMS to take a PROMOTIONAL exam to promote to the RANK of FIREFIGHTER only if they haven't passed the cut off age 29.Fast forward 28 years later the age restriction is still in place. A 2 year extension was granted for the open Competitive exam7001 And the FDNY EMS Fire PROMOTIONAL exam has was delayed due to the PANDEMIC. The next FDNY EMS Fire PROMOTIONAL exam filing was NOVEMBER 1 2023 to November 21 2023 and the exam given in 2024.NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL has passed bill 1190 a one time age extension for FDNY EMS who aged out in the year 2019 and 2020 but not the members who aged out before 2019 or the years before waiting to take the PROMOTIONAL EXAM.in addition to the one time age extension other FDNY Employees are now able to take the upcoming FDNY FIREFIGHTER PROMOTIONAL EXAM that is only available to FDNY EMS Members who at the time only had to be on the job 2 years and in the age range in order to promote to FDNY FIREFIGHTER. Since the bill 1190 was signed by the mayor anyone who is a fire protection inspector,FDNY Dispatcher, FDNY EMS must do a minmal of 4 years in order to promote to the rank of FIREFIGHTER. In 2012 the FDNY EMS PROMOTIONAL exam age was rasied to 35 for members who aged out due to a highering freeze from a Discrimanation lawsuit that lasted 6 years.The city is in federal volition of age discrimination under the Age Discrimination Act of 1967. Raising the age limit for the open COMPETITIVE FIREFIGHTER Exam and removing the age limit for FDNY Employees FDNY FIREFIGHTER PROMOTIONAL Exam acknowledges the changing nature of our city's workforce as well as the increased health and longevity of our population. This change will enable many more qualified young men and women to serve as one of NYC ' S Bravest. Almost 42,000 people took the New York City Firefighter entrance exam in 2017 and the FDNY EMS PROMOTIONAL EXAM was given back in 2016 8 years ago . The test is given every 4 to 5 years, and you must be under 29 to take the exam. The number of applicants alone shows the competitive nature of the process. It may take a person two exams, possibly 8 years or longer to have a list number low enough to get called to go onto the next stage in the hiring process. This age limit impacts the young EMTs and Paramedics over 29 years of age who are already working for the FDNY, who could otherwise Be prompted to the RANK of Firefighter. With the new requirements for FDNY EMS instead serving two year members who ant to be promoted must be on the job 4 years and off probation in order to promote after taking the promotioal exam. Considering the test is given every 4 years or so and imposes an age limit as young as 29 makes becoming one of New York City's Bravest one of the hardest things to do. Removing the age limit for FDNY EMS would be the best thing since EMS already apart of the FDNY. AGE Shouldnt hold up anyone who is already working in FDNY EMS looking to promote to the RANK of Fire Fighter.There are thousands men and women over the age of 29 both in FDNY EMS and genreal public who meet the qualification who would make great firefighters. As long as a person is able to pass the written and physical tests they should be allowed a chance. If we are to have an age limit, a more reasonable one must be identified. This petition calls for the age of 36 due to the FDNY having hired PRIORITY HIRES who have successfully completed the FDNY Fire academy and have become New York City Firefighters who were past the cut off age 29. Due to the Covid 19 global pandemic that has happened beyond anybody's control many potential candidate have aged off the list and will not be eligible to re take the exam being given in the 2024 due to the age restrictions which is age discrimination under the Age Discrimination act of 1967 . Also The FDNY EMS PROMOTIONAL FIRE EXAM hasn't come out in 8 years and alot of members on FDNY EMS will age out or have already aged out because of the age limit. Consider this...

Increasing the appointment age on the open COMPETITIVE EXAM and removing the age limit for FDNY FIRE FIGHTER PROMOTIONAL EXAM will ensure that qualified members of FDNY EMS who choose to promote to the Rank of FireFighter will provide the city with quality services of both fire suppression and pre hospital care. Rasing the age for the open compettive test will also give people a fair chance to persue the opportunity to become a FDNY FIREFIGHTER and serve the city.
