Lift Cannabis Restrictions in Food and Cosmetics

Lift Cannabis Restrictions in Food and Cosmetics
The Issue
Lift Cannabis Restrictions in Food and Cosmetics
We, the undersigned citizens of South Africa, call for a review and amendment of the restrictions on cannabis in food and cosmetics under Act No. 54 of 1972.
Why This Matters:
Health and Wellness Benefits: Cannabis has proven to offer numerous health benefits when used appropriately in food and cosmetic products. These benefits include pain relief, anti-inflammatory properties, skin care, and anxiety reduction. By restricting cannabis use in these products, South African consumers are being denied access to potentially life-enhancing options.
Economic Potential: South Africa has a unique opportunity to become a leader in the African cannabis market. Allowing the responsible incorporation of cannabis in food and cosmetics has lead to job creation and local entrepreneurship. The current restrictions limit the growth potential of a thriving industry that can contribute to South Africa's economic growth.
Global Trends and Scientific Advancements: International research and development in cannabis-based products continue to grow. Many countries, including Canada, the United States, and certain European nations, have successfully integrated cannabis into consumer products. By maintaining outdated restrictions, South Africa risks falling behind in global innovation and economic competitiveness.
Safety Regulations and Consumer Protection: We recognise that regulation is important for consumer safety. However, current regulations should be updated to allow for cannabis to be used safely in food and cosmetics, with strict standards, testing, and oversight. The current law does not adequately balance public safety with the opportunities that cannabis use can provide.
Human Rights and Personal Freedom: South Africa has long prided itself on human rights and personal freedoms. The 2018 Constitutional Court ruling on the decriminalisation of cannabis emphasised the right of adults to make decisions about their own health and lifestyle choices. These rights should extend to access to cannabis in all forms, including its use in food and cosmetics.
Our Request:
We urge the South African government to:
- Update Act No. 54 of 1972 to allow cannabis in food and cosmetics with clear, regulated standards.
- Foster Industry Growth by creating an environment that supports cannabis innovation while ensuring safety.
By signing this petition, we call for progress that supports public health, economic growth, and personal choice.
