Lifeguards are first responders too!

Lifeguards are first responders too!
The Issue
My friends, colleagues, and I work as lifeguards, and we strongly believe that our role merits recognition as first responders. It's not just about us; it's about acknowledging lifeguards worldwide who, much like other first responders, are the first on the scene of emergencies. The statistics speak volumes: drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide, a grim reminder of the critical need for swift and effective response times that lifeguards consistently meet.
Lifeguards are trained professionals who act quickly to assess and respond to emergencies, often risking their own lives to save others. Our responsibilities extend far beyond poolside and beach surveillance; we perform CPR, administer first aid, and coordinate with emergency medical services, embodying the critical first responder role. The recognition of lifeguards as first responders is not merely a title but a validation of our crucial contribution to public health and safety.
Being officially recognized would bring several benefits. It would ensure better access to resources, training, and support, enhancing our ability to perform our duties even more effectively. Increased status could lead to improved standards of safety and preparedness, ultimately saving more lives. Additionally, the recognition would reflect the reality of our work and the trust the public places in us to protect lives.
We are calling upon relevant authorities, regulatory bodies, and lawmakers to formally recognize lifeguards as first responders. This acknowledgment is long overdue, and it is crucial for supporting the profession and lifesaving work lifeguards perform every day. Sign this petition to advocate for the formal recognition of lifeguards as first responders, a change that would honor their dedication and bravery and promote the safety and well-being of communities around the globe. Please join us in this important cause and lend your support to make this change a reality. Sign the petition today.
