I’ve made this petition for one reason. The disgusting, sexist dress code needs to end. We’re in school from age 5 (sometimes younger sometimes older) all the way up until we’re around 17. And in those years that we’re in school young women are constantly told what’s appropriate and what’s not. “Your shoulders shouldn’t be showing, your shorts are “too short”, your stomach shouldn’t be showing, etc.” And the reason for most of these rules are so the boys (students and teachers) don’t get distracted. But these rules can be seen as unreasonable for many reasons. 1) These rules don’t consider the fact that crop tops and shorter shorts are often targeted towards women. 2) These rules lead to bigger (or curvier) women being targeted more then skinnier (or less curvy) women because of their body type. They could be wearing the same outfit but the curvier woman would be more likely to get dress coded. 3) Plus size women often have a hard time finding cute clothes that they feel comfortable in that are school appropriate. The tank tops or shorts might be the only thing they’re comfortable in. 4) Growing up and constantly hearing that you’re clothing is distracting to others can be damaging to people’s mental health (especially if it’s mainly cause of their body type) 5) Boys aren’t held to the same standards that girls are when it comes to the dress code. And so much more. This needs to stop for the sake of women’s comfort, mental health, and grades.
