Many Canadians do not know that the civic holiday in August celebrates John Simcoe.  Simcoe Day should be known as Emancipation Day because Simcoe was instrumental in abolishing slavery in Canada. We should focus on the act of abolishing Slavery, rather than celebrating Simcoe, who had a checkered past in Canada and the US.
