Opposition of Parking Meter Rate Increase & Hourly Changes

The Issue

Starting January 3rd, 2023, the Lexington & Fayette County Parking Authority (LexPark) will increase parking rates for metered spots throughout Lexington. This will affect workers & consumers in the area significantly.

Areas that are currently $0.50 per hour will now be $0.75 per hour
Areas that are currently $1 per hour will now be $1.50 per hour
Areas that are currently $1.50 per hour will now be $2 per hour

In addition to the rate increase, The hours for metered parking will be changed from Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., to Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. However, this will not affect Sunday's free parking.

After speaking with employees and business owners, some of the concerns raised include the following:

• Employees of businesses downtown continuously receiving parking tickets

• Parking tickets leading quickly to boots/barnacles on cars

• Major financial hit due to consistent parking tickets or spending $15-$30 to park daily

• For a full-time employee downtown, a work week can cost up to $80 for a 40-hour work week or $15 to $30 per ticket due to allotted time violations. After exceeding two tickets, the Parking Authority can "boot" or "barnacle" your car, removing your transportation access.

• The online access through Lex park will only allow a 2-hour limit for the license plate, increasing the difficulty to park downtown for a 6-8 hour shift (12-14 hour double) without breaking from work to revalidate parking

• Increased exposure to danger when parking in garages due to an extended walk to and from work

• Potential loss of employees and customers for local businesses with no reasonable parking options

These changes made by the Parking Authority will only make the local business struggle more, as they are still trying to regain their footing after the impact of COVID-19. In order to protect local businesses and employees, it is up to us to make our voices heard in the opposition to these changes. Even if this does not directly affect you, think about your friends and family that work in areas where it will affect them.
