Further recognize Diwali in the school system

The Issue

Diwali is the Hindu festival of light, celebrating the return of legendary Lord Ram and the triumph of good over evil. We feel that Lexington, as an increasingly diverse town, should acknowledge the growing Indian population throughout the public schools. While the school committee has commissioned a new calendar which recognizes Diwali, we feel the holiday should be further addressed. Indian students and teachers are currently unable to celebrate Diwali properly due to school and the homework that is assigned. By signing this, you show that you support further action by the school committee, such as no homework the previous night and night of, a half day, or a whole day off.  Thank you for your time and consideration.
