Why this petition matters

Started by Ranjit K Sharma

Lexico.com, the free online dictionary, powered by Oxford University Press, had closed on 26 Aug 2022. What shuts with this is the free access to a world-class, most-authoritative reference dictionary to hundreds of thousands of students, teachers, trainers, academics, researchers, editors, writers, content developers, print publishers, digital publishers and language enthusiasts.

Knowledge should be free. By closing this free authentic source, Oxford University Press and Dictionary.com (the parties involved in running the Lexico website) have basically denied knowledge to a sizeable community of knowledge-seekers across the world.

Nothing can replace this abrupt discontinuation of services for many who cannot afford either the print or paid online versions of Oxford Dictionaries. Without the services of Lexico, research, academic referencing and citation have come to a naught for those who are economically challenged. I personally believe that this is affecting those needing the UK version even more, due to the lack of authentic and elaborate UK-English online dictionaries. Knowledge is now limited to only those who can afford paid dictionaries.

We cannot let this happen. We cannot let Oxford University Press, which is supposedly a non-profit organisation, act like cash-hungry corporations and go against the interests of the intellectual and student communities.

Dear lover of the language, please sign my petition to put pressure on Oxford University Press decision-makers to either continue collaborating with Dictionary.com to run the Lexico.com website or restore the old oxforddictionaries.com website.

The limited version of Oxford Dictionary entries currently found under Google definition search does not include the example sentences, which are so very important to fully understand the literal and contextual meanings of words. Also, it does not include all the sub-entries for each word that were found on Lexico.com.

Dear friend, please sign the petition and share it with your friends. Only when a large number of people sign this petition can we expect victory in the form of a reversal of Oxford University Press's decision to close Lexico.com.
