BUT MORE TOO COME
The recent 25th anniversary of the Royal Commision into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC) gave LEX WOTTON the opportunity to reflect on what has and hasn't been achieved.
Recommendations were made to address the systemic racism within our justice system, as well as broader actions to address Aboriginal disadvantage, however 25 years on little action has been taken.
Authentic application of these reccomendations to the policing systems has potential to address justice... issues in a way they have never been addressed before. This application would be timely as the Deaths in Custody issues are recorded as increasing since the Royal Commission held 25 years ago.
LEX WOTTON is calling on the state government to add a new position to the Queensland police - a second commissioner, who must be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander - so as to tackle the ingrained inequality in our justice system.
This would mirror the commissioner position that was created in the Family and Child Commission two years ago. What was deemed an important step for the Family and Child Commission should also be enacted in the Queensland Police Service.
To address the national crisis of indigenous kids and adults in prison, LEX WOTTON and others want to change the legal landscape and thus change the future of our indigenous kids for the better.
To do so LEX aims to make Deaths in Custody a federal election issue, using similar petitions in all states to create a demand for higher national standards in policing.
LEX believes in presenting a united front and uniting the states in this goal. Join him and help end discrimination in the justice system and make a real difference in the lives of indigenous kids and adults
