The Issue

Lewes canal front playground is a beloved spot for local and visiting families to gather and enjoy the beautiful environment while our children can play and exercise. However, its proximity to the water without a fence presents a significant hazard. With only a few moments of distraction, a day of fun can turn into a heartbreaking tragedy. Unfortunately, without a barrier, the risk of drowning is heightened exponentially.

Installing a secure fence around the playground would mitigate this risk drastically. This playground is only 45 steps from the water’s edge. I’ve walked it myself. That’s less than 15 seconds for a child to run—especially a toddler, chasing a ball or simply exploring. And as any parent knows, children can slip away in an instant. A properly designed and constructed fence would not only serve as a physical barrier, but also as a mental reminder for families about the potential dangers of the nearby water. It could provide peace of mind to parents and guardians, allowing children to play freely and safely, while ensuring adults are still vigilant. We have fenced in the nearby tennis and basketball courts and our dog parks! Our children deserve the utmost safety measures as well.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 14, claiming the lives of about 1,000 children every year in the U.S. alone.  It is the leading cause of death for children 1-4 years old. It can happen silently, and quickly. This is a statistic we can work to reduce, starting with our own community by implementing sensible safety measures.

A fence around the playground could make this area more inclusive to children with diverse abilities. Many neurodivergent children have a tendency to wander away from caregivers without understanding the dangers around them, including bodies of water or traffic. A secure fence would help serve this population and create an inclusive area for all children.

Lewes is a community that values the well-being and safety of its children. By taking the necessary steps to install protective fencing, we can demonstrate our commitment to protecting their future and fostering safer recreational environments for them to enjoy.

We don’t need to wait for a tragedy to take action. We can make a difference today—with one simple, smart, preventative step.

Join me in urging the city officials of Lewes to take immediate action to safeguard our playground. Please sign this petition to advocate for the installation of a fence around the Lewes Canalfront playground.

This petition will be presented at the next Parks and Recreation meeting on August 18! Please spread this to any friends and family who also love to frequent the playground.

Thank you for your support!
