Letter to Minister Rodriguez to help stop Russian Propaganda in Canada

Letter to Minister Rodriguez to help stop Russian Propaganda in Canada
Why this petition matters
Please help combat Russian Federation Propaganda that is being spread by a Canadian Company called ETVnet. The letter below will be sent to Canada's Minister of Cultural Heritage. Please sign this petition in support of this letter.
Dear Minister Rodriguez,
In your capacity as Canada’s Minister of Cultural Heritage we are aware of your significant focus on stopping the spread of misinformation online. For this reason, We are writing you with an urgent plea to stop the spread of Russian propaganda on ETVNET owned by Matvil Corp, "one of the largest players in the Russian online television market” (so cited on the Matvil LinkedIn page). We are all aware that Prime Minister Trudeau directed you in his Ministerial Mandate Letter, dated 12/16/21, to "ensure Canada’s laws reflect our evolving digital world, you will work to introduce legislation to reform the Broadcasting Act, ask web giants to pay their fair share and combat serious forms of harmful online content” and to "Continue efforts with the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada to develop and introduce legislation as soon as possible to combat serious forms of harmful online content to protect Canadians and hold social media platforms and other online services accountable for the content they host." The Prime Minister also recently announced while in Europe a C$3-million commitment to tackle disinformation “around Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine.” Online content that is dangerous and deceitful should be eradicated immediately and it is reassuring to know that “to combat harmful online content” is a clear priority of Prime Minister Trudeau’s and that of your ministry. We, Russian-speaking Canadians and Americans, are often forced to rely on news and media sources on the Internet to stay abreast of events in Ukraine. Imagine our shock and anger when we see that ETVNET broadcasts Russian-made online propaganda - not news. and a lie fabricated by Putin, whose strategy is to broadcast his propaganda around the world in an attempt to justify his unprovoked murderous invasion of Ukraine. We represent a large group of Canadians and Americans of Ukrainian descent, as well as other concerned citizens who are outraged by what the Canadian government supports by allowing ETVNET to continue distributing this content online. You just need to watch one Russian channel to understand how dangerous the misinformation is. The numerous Russian channels streaming on eTVnet are: Channel One, REN-TV,Russia,NTV, RT ( Russia Today)RIA Novosti, TV Center, Russia 1, Zvezda, Tsargrad TV, Russia-24, TNT, STS, TVCenter, Channel Five, TVC, RTR. They are working overtime to spread a false narrative and make Ukrainians all over the world the target of violence. Just yesterday, the beautiful Ukrainian American Youth Association in Ellenville, NY was attacked and destroyed by arson, a direct result of Russian propaganda that is encouraging violence against innocent Ukrainian civilian targets. Will the Ukrainian Museum of Canada in Ontario or the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village in Alberta be next? The above mentioned online channels have been banned by democracies all over the world and yet Canada remains silent allowing eTVnet to promote Putin’s immoral, illegal agenda. How can Canada fail to act when it is home to over 1.4 M people of Ukrainian heritage, the world’s second largest diaspora of Ukrainians? We have already communicated directly with Mykola Skrynnk, CEO of ETVNET demanding that he cease and desist from streaming this evil Russian disinformation. He informed me that eTVnet justifies keeping Russian content alongside Ukrainian content helps foster "a free marketplace of ideas “ which is deceitful when he knows the Russian “ideas” are thinly veiled lies for which there should be no marketplace. He also said “If any of the channels we carry, including the ones you take issue with, are added to lists of prohibited content we will take those channels down.” Rather than exhibiting courageous leadership in this matter, Mr. Skrynnk is waiting for the Canadian government to tell him how to act with integrity and ultimately do the right thing; meanwhile, thousands of innocent Ukrainians are being slaughtered on their home soil. In addition to this letter, we are organizing a major protest and circulating a petition to be signed by thousands demanding the Canadian government’s take immediate action on this matter. We look forward to your Ministry’s response and expect the Trudeau government to live up to it’s commitment "to combat serious forms of harmful online content”.. Respectfully and with urgency,
Decision Makers
