Dear Chancellor Frenk,

UCLA has long been a pillar of excellence, producing leaders whose influence has shaped not just athletics, but academia, culture, and society at large. From Nobel Prize–winning diplomat Ralph Bunche, whose vision for peace and justice carried him to the world stage, to Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball’s color barrier and forever changed America, to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Arthur Ashe, who stood as athletes, activists, and intellectuals. From the legendary Coach Wooden and his “Pyramid of Success,” to Troy Aikman’s move to UCLA and the era of dominance under Terry Donahue, the Bruins’ Legacy is both profound and unmatched.

This tradition is about more than winning championships. It is about setting standards of courage, integrity, and visionary leadership that inspire generations and place UCLA among the nation’s elite. That history demands excellence at every level of the university, particularly in positions of leadership that shape the trajectory of its athletic programs and cultural identity.

It is within this context that we must express deep concern with the current direction of UCLA Athletics under Martin Jarmond. Despite the resources, history, and opportunities at his disposal, Mr. Jarmond has not demonstrated the level of leadership or vision consistent with UCLA’s proud legacy. Rather than building on the foundations of greatness established by those before him, his tenure has fallen short of advancing UCLA to its rightful place among the nation’s premier programs.

UCLA deserves an athletic director who understands that this role is not merely about administration, but about stewardship of a legacy—one rooted in excellence, historic achievement, and national leadership. Unfortunately, Mr. Jarmond has not embodied these values, nor has he positioned UCLA Athletics to rise to the standard its history demands.

For UCLA to reclaim its rightful standing among the nation’s elite, new leadership is essential. A change at the top is necessary to reestablish the university’s commitment to excellence, both on and off the field, and to honor the enduring tradition of greatness represented by figures expressed earlier.

We urge you to consider this moment not just as an evaluation of one individual’s performance, but as a reflection on the future of UCLA Athletics and its role in carrying forward the extraordinary legacy of Bruins. The past shows us what is possible. The present demands decisive action so that the future can once again reflect the greatness that UCLA has always stood for.

This is bigger than any one of us. Former players have joined forces—through countless calls, texts, and meetings—to push this cause forward. We are united in our commitment to protecting the proud legacy of UCLA football and athletics
