Hello Calhoun!

With the addition of the Union Grove exit and our mostly beloved Buccee's gas station, a new set of traffic challenges have emerged. This petition calls to increase the safety & traffic conditions for all residents and travelers that use the Calhoun South Bypass on a regular basis. 

We, the undersigned residents of Calhoun and Gordon County, Georgia, petition the Calhoun City Council and Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to consider the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Union Grove Rd. and GA Hwy 53 on the Calhoun South Bypass.

Traffic Congestion and Safety Concerns:

The current three-way intersection experiences significant traffic congestion, particularly during the evening rush hour (around 5 pm) with traffic coming from Calhoun. This congestion is only expected to worsen with the ongoing development of a new subdivision in Sonoraville.

Furthermore, making left turns on to the bypass from Calhoun onto GA Hwy 53 towards Sonoraville/Fairmount is particularly dangerous due to the road drop-off on both sides of the road, which severely limits driver visibility. This poses a major safety hazard for all drivers, especially our younger and less experienced motorists.

Benefits of a Roundabout:

A roundabout at this intersection would significantly improve traffic flow by reducing congestion and eliminating the need for traffic signals. Roundabouts also demonstrably enhance safety by reducing the potential for high-speed, t-bone collisions that are common at traditional intersections.

Taking Action for Our Community:

We, the undersigned, urge the Calhoun City Council and GDOT to prioritize the safety of our community and the smooth flow of traffic for residents traveling eastward. A roundabout at this location would benefit all drivers, young and old, and create a safer and more efficient traffic flow for those traveling to Sonoraville, Fairmount, Jasper, and Ellijay.
