Lets get the government to regulate the delivery app system!

Lets get the government to regulate the delivery app system!
The Issue
What is the problem with the current delivery/rideshare app system?
Factually Delivery app workers are exploited in alarming areas many of which have an impact not only on the public but the government as well!
Why should I care?
If you believe in any of the following , this is something you should get behind:
- Making the government actually do something
- Workers rights in Canada
- Tax theft
- That Companies shouldn't be stealing from their workers
- Equal rights in Canada
- Fair pay , Work , Wage and Representation
Acting now is important!
Okay , I'm kind of listening. What do you even want and why?
What we want is The Canadian government to regulate , legislate and create laws for a few simple things that some would assume are already a part of the delivery app system. (here's a breakdown and then a great lengthy explanation of each one for those who care to read it!)We also wonder why the government has dragged its feet on this for so long when literal tax dollars are being stolen.
- 100% of the delivery and tip charged for delivery + tip (for every order including doubles)
- The HST charged for the delivery fee + Tip (yes they charge you HST on your tip and delivery fee and they keep it for themselves and get richer when it should go to the driver who is paid that portion of the fee)
- Fair representation within the companies that subcontract couriers
- Delivery fees to be calculated fairly using time , distance and an average gas cost
- A few set rules to govern all delivery, transportation and courier apps across Canada.
1.We want the money that is paid for our services in full.
Certain Delivery apps have introduced double orders. However are charging 4+ dollars to the customer per delivery per customer and paying the delivery driver 5 dollars for both deliveries + a small portion of tip. Why are discounts not either : being given to the customer or why are the full amounts not being given to the driver ? A multimillion dollar company(ies) that steal from their subcontracted employees shouldn't be allowed but here we are.
We want the full Delivery fee + tip + HST portion of the money charged to the customer. The company doesn't deliver the food and already has a slew of fees. why steal driver related fees? When you pay 5 dollars in delivery and a 5 dollar tip you assume the driver just made 10 dollars. Why is this not so? why do they only get 6-7 dollars? Any company that stole money from employees would be shut down quick , because we are "sub contractors" without legislation , representation and laws in place to protect us we are exploitable.
2. The HST portion of the delivery and tip fees
Aside from the food costs , stealing delivery fees , taking portion of the restaurants profit , the service fees and small order fees and whatever else they can squeeze in. Companies also charge HST on your delivery fee and tip portions but do not remit that to the driver What this means is. You pay HST for the delivery and tip. The driver doesn't get that HST the company does and steals that too. The driver gets their limited portion of delivery and the tip and then its further reduced by the HST Customers have already paid Where does it go? Likely a tax shelter account or into mass company profits.
Order breakdown
Assuming you order on a popular delivery app your order may look like this
Food cost - 30 dollars
delivery fee - 5 dollars
small order fee - 1 dollar
service fee - 1 dollar
tip - 5 dollars (thank you!)
HST - 5.46
Total - 47.46
If your order is included in a multi-order the company is paying your driver 6 dollars to deliver your food. if its not included in a multi order the company pays your driver 7-10. when you have paid 11.30 for delivery
What are we asking for? The full 11.30 What you quite literally pay us to deliver your food , every time. that means the driver gets 10 dollars
Actual delivery breakdown
assuming we get the 7 dollars from your 11.30 this is what the driver actually gets by the end of the day
Assume the delivery is 10km
Driver receives 7 dollars
Driver is taxed .91 on that order (but you paid 1.30 in tax for just the delivery?)
Gas cost (7 litres average per 100km at 1.50 per litre) 1.05
Driver receives 5.04 at the end of the trip. If that trip took him more than 20 minutes he has officially made less than minimum wage.
But you paid 11.30 for the delivery why didn't they get that full amount?
That's what we want to know and why we are demanding this.
at the end of the year we pay our taxes they don't get sheltered. but you've already paid our taxes , so we should get what we get. we do not.
3. Fair representation within the companies
This one is self explanatory. Unions fought tooth and nail and continue to fight. I'm not saying we need a union for this. But I am saying that no one who represents drivers would agree to "Hey lets make multi orders, charge the customer the full delivery fee of 4-10 dollars and give the delivery driver 1 dollar because its *on the way*" without fair representation within the company , these companies can do whatever they want and quite literally defecate on workers , worker rights and everything this country has been built on and stands for in terms of employment. If you believe in works rights , fair wages , fair work then you would believe in driver representation within the company. If not a union , then how hard is it to have drivers vote on company changes. It should be a give and take not just a take take from corporations. If you want 1 dollar deliveries? the customer gets the savings , not your company. we should be able to decline orders we don't feel are worth it , without punishment. A fair Canada is where I was born , lived , worked and grew up in. A fair Canada is what I want to see prosper. Everyone deserves representation. Even lowly delivery drivers.
4. Delivery fee calculations to be fair and include time distance and gas costs
This one is also self explanatory. As much as you the customer deserve affordable delivery fees. the driver deserves fair delivery. We rely on tips more than bar tenders and waitresses to get fair wages and we don't believe that should be the case. As someone who lives off tips? Tips should be given to someone who provides excellent service. They should still get the bare minimums. as we shown before a 10km trip can take 20-30 minutes traffic depending , how hard finding the house might be and how long the wait is at the restaurant. and we already get less. do i want to make 30 dollars an hour? sure if i provide quality 30 dollar an hour service. But we should all agree that the min wage in Canada is 15 dollarsish. So if an order is estimated to take 30 mins assumably 7.50 would be the min for time/distance and using the calculation from before 1.05 in gas. so your delivery fee should be 8.55 + HST and that should be remitted to the driver. If you choose to tip , great but if not ? at least the person delivering your food has made minimum wage plus their gas cost. the tip should exceed minimum wage standards. not be used to hopefully make them. Would you say that's fair? I do. It may mean you only tip 3 dollars now instead of 5. but you know that even if you're hard for money you don't HAVE to tip and the driver wont be getting the dirty end of the stick while the company makes a mint
5. Government implimenting of rules , legislation and law
Why hasn't the government jumped on this yet? Why has the government allowed Delivery apps to not only exploit workers but to STEAL money up to and including HST amounts? No one knows but until we all speak up. Like everything else in the world. Nothing changes
For those of you who read this and made it to the bottom? Wether you agree or disagree I thank you graciously.
