Let Vipassana’s Compassion Extend to the Plate — Make Meals Fully Plant-Based

Let Vipassana’s Compassion Extend to the Plate — Make Meals Fully Plant-Based
The Issue
Vipassana welcomes people from all walks of life to practice compassion, peace, and self-awareness. For some participants who follow a vegan lifestyle—whether for ethical, environmental, or health reasons—the current vegetarian menu can feel out of step with their daily values.
Many associate dairy, eggs, and other animal-derived ingredients with industries they believe cause harm to animals. Since Ahimsa (non-harming) is often discussed in Vipassana, a plant-based menu could more closely reflect how many participants interpret this principle.
The opportunity
A fully plant-based menu could:
- Include everyone — vegans, vegetarians, and most dietary needs — in one unified approach.
- Align meals more closely with many participants’ understanding of compassion.
- Support the planet and simplify kitchen operations.
- Show compassion in action, not just in words.
The health confidence
Major studies like the EPIC-Oxford study and a recent twin randomized trial show plant-based diets can lower cholesterol, improve heart health, and reduce disease risk. These findings echo what many experience — plant-based eating supports both physical well-being and mindful living.
A note from me
This petition is not meant to discourage anyone from attending Vipassana — far from it. Vipassana is one of the most powerful meditation practices in the world, and I encourage everyone to experience it. This is simply a suggestion to make the food align even more beautifully with the values of compassion many already cherish.
