Me, 14F, and my friend 13F have recently discovered a new implemented rule by the ministry of education in Qatar. This rule states that students from Y7-Y11 are not permitted to bring their phones into school, even if it is out of sight. This rule has enraged us and many others due to impractical and inefficient. Firstly, how are students meant to contact their guardians after school? Are we supposed to simply wait for the right car blindly? And what about students that take Uber or have a driver? This can cause many complications for these students. Some schools advise their students to take their matter and call from the reception, but that could lead to hundreds of calls at once. Secondly, guardians do not want their children to be roaming around without any way to communicate with them. This could be unsafe, also some people put trackers of their children’s phones for their safety and without that this could simply enrage parents and put their child’s safety in danger. We believe that this rule will lead to more harm than good as it can overwhelm our ONE reception lady. As long as the students phone are inside their bags and are not visible then there shouldn’t be a problem. Before COVID-19 shut down the world the norm for schools around the globe, but schools teach us that we should MAKE HISTORY NOT REPEAT IT. This also is a tremendous injustice due to the fact that we are now extremely used to having a phone on us at all times, some can’t even leave the house without it, this can be for many factors such as for safety and not for addiction. Additionally, teachers are allowed to continue bring their phone and using it during lesson time, while the students have been forbidden to use them at all, even when it’s not school hours. In conclusion this is simply a waste of time and effort and has been implemented by incompetent people who have no idea how it is like to be a student in this new era of technology, post-Covid. The people who made this rule are above the age of schooling, and while they were at school phones were not used as often as they are today. They need to understand that the times have changed and phones are a necessity in students everyday lives. Although, most adults are still permitted to use their phones, so this incredibly hypocritical that they have banned us from using them. We hope you listen and change this ridiculous rule that adds no benefit to anyone’s lives.
