We, the undersigned residents of Hawaii, are writing to formally request an immediate evaluation of the current protocols at animal shelters holding service animals. We believe that every owner and service animal in our islands deserves a fair chance. "Let The Sweetheart Out Hawaii" is an initiative that advocates for misunderstood service animals and their disabled owners. Our community resources should be prioritized toward life-saving measures rather than fighting litigation. We need the Hawaiian Humane Society to DIVEST. To ensure accountability of spending donations and taxpayers funding, DIVEST now. In addition, we ask to adopt a "No Kill" policy where at least 90% of all incoming animals are saved. We desire transparency. Publish monthly "Save Rate" statistics, including specific reasons for every instance of euthanasia. Address shelter overcrowding, which is often a primary driver for euthanasia. Behavioral rehabilitation for all healthy and treatable animals in rescue shelters is essential. Hire behaviorists to work with both "good" and "difficult" animals. Our rationale comes from community values. Hawaii’s culture is rooted in Oiaio (Truth), Ola Kino (Health) and Kaiaulu (Community). Euthanizing healthy animals for space contradicts our community values. As donors and taxpayers, we support and fund your programs. We desire a humane system that reflects community values. The Hawaiian Humane Society has a long history of serving our animals, but the time has come to change. We ask that you listen to the voices of the community and commit to a future where no healthy or treatable animal is forgotten in your care.
