The issue

Sunbury is a proud country town with our own identity, yet we continue to be overlooked by the City of Hume in Broadmeadows.

As one of Victoria’s fastest-growing areas, Sunbury should be seeing major investment in roads, services, and community infrastructure. Instead, our community is being left behind while other parts of Hume receive significant attention.

The reality on the ground tells the story.

Sunbury continues to miss out on critical infrastructure and investment, including:

  • No funded indoor basketball stadium, despite clear and growing demand
  • No funded upgrade or masterplan for Sunbury SALC and leisure centre
  • Sunbury Road duplication still incomplete, causing daily congestion
  • Ongoing traffic chaos on the Calder Freeway with no meaningful upgrades
  • The steady erosion of the Green Wedge, threatening Sunbury’s character
  • Illegal dumping and burning of rubbish by rogue operators across Sunbury’s Green Wedge
  • A proposed waste incinerator just 200 metres from homes
  • Racecourse Road land sold off, with no return of benefit to Sunbury
  • Among the lowest infrastructure spending per resident in the municipality
  • No lift at Sunbury Train Station, limiting accessibility
  • No museum or dedicated space to celebrate Sunbury’s historic George Evans Collection and closure of the Visitors Centre
  • Jacksons Hill historic precinct being lost to overdevelopment
  • Bulla Parklands neglected for years without proper investment
  • Sunbury United sporting facilities left in disarray
  • Promised redevelopment of the Goonawarra golf course never delivered

This is not one issue,  it is a serious ongoing pattern of neglect.

Decisions are being made further away from the people they affect, and Sunbury’s needs are consistently pushed aside. A growing community cannot continue to operate without the infrastructure and representation it deserves.

A separate Sunbury council would put decision-making back where it belongs,  in Sunbury. It would ensure that local rates are reinvested locally, that growth is managed properly, and that our community finally has a strong, independent voice.

This is about fairness, accountability, and the future of our town.

We call on all political candidates standing in the State Election to represent Sunbury to:

  • To honour the community plebiscite that voted for an independent Sunbury Shire in 2013
  • Commit the next Local Government Minister to creating a new Sunbury Shire which is already gazetted in law
  • Engage directly with Sunbury residents about their future governance model immediately at the conclusion of the election

Sunbury deserves better. It’s time to give our community the representation and investment it needs.
