Let Students Have Free Seating Every Day at Westglades Middle

The Issue

Hey, if you are reading this, chances are you are a fellow student of Westglades Middle School in Parkland, FL and are fed up with not being able to sit where we want at lunch, or you are a member of staff who wants to know the reasoning behind this petition. Well, we want free seating every day for a few main reasons:

Promotes Social Development
Free seating encourages students to develop essential social skills by interacting with peers outside of their usual groups. This broadens social circles and helps people make new friends.

Reduces Anxiety and Stress
Fixed seating can cause social anxiety for some students, especially those who feel isolated. Allowing free seating helps them choose where they feel most comfortable, reducing social pressure.

Encourages Collaboration and Problem-Solving
Free seating during lunch allows students from different backgrounds to come together, potentially leading to cross-group collaboration and problem-solving.

Boosts Student Autonomy and Responsibility
Free seating encourages students to make decisions for themselves, teaching them responsibility and how to manage their time and friendships effectively.

Improves Mental Health
A sense of control over where to sit can boost students' emotional well-being. Giving students the freedom to choose can lead to reduced feelings of frustration and helplessness.

Prepares Students for Real-World Experiences
In professional and social settings, individuals often have the freedom to choose where to sit or gather during breaks. Allowing students free seating prepares them for such real-world environments.

Reduces Disruptions and Improves Behavior
When students are allowed to sit where they feel comfortable, they are more likely to behave positively and feel engaged during lunch. Assigned seating can foster resentment and rebellion, which may lead to breaking the rules by sitting not where they are supposed to.

Creates a Sense of Belonging
Free seating helps students create their own social identity and feel a sense of belonging, which is crucial for psychological and social well-being during adolescence.

Encourages Peer Support Networks
Free seating allows students to form support networks with friends and peers who may help each other through personal or academic difficulties, promoting a healthier school environment.

Enhances Lunchtime Experience and Enjoyment
Lunchtime is one of the few moments during the school day when students have a break from structured academic learning. Free seating allows students to relax and enjoy their break, contributing to better academic focus afterward.

With that said, free seating can be good for students' mental health and social skills, allowing people to sit with friends and have a good time in their only full-length break from class.

Sure, some kids make big messes at tables, but that's their problem, not everyone else's. It's not fair that we only have free seating on Fridays, with it almost always being cancelled because some kid made a mess with their food.

Instead of punishing the entire cafeteria, the supervisor should just take away that class's free seating for the day and let everyone else eat where they want, every day of the week.

Sincerely, the students of Westglades Middle
