Sparta Middle School students are expected to move quickly between classes while carrying books, binders, folders, Chromebooks, water bottles, and other supplies. With backpacks and school-approved totes prohibited, students often have only minutes between classes to get what they need.

There simply isn’t enough time for students to run up multiple flights of stairs to their lockers, gather their materials, and then race back down the stairs to make it to class on time. Instead, they are forced to carry everything by hand through crowded hallways and up and down stairs, creating an unnecessary safety concern.

We understand and respect the school’s safety concerns. We are not asking for unrestricted backpacks. We are asking for a reasonable compromise: allow students to carry one small, school-approved backpack or tote with clear size and safety guidelines. The PTA could even make and sell a tote for parents to purchase. 

Our children deserve a safe and practical way to carry the materials they are expected to have while navigating their busy school day.

Please sign and share this petition to ask Sparta Township Public Schools and the Sparta Board of Education to reconsider the current policy and find a solution that balances safety with our students’ needs.
