Dear leaders and human rights defenders,
From the vast and remote Tibetan plateau, an ancient culture of peace and spirituality sends out a silent cry for help. The Tibetan people-especially their monks and nuns, guardians of a millennia-old Buddhist tradition-are facing an existential threat. The repression imposed by the Chinese government is brutal and relentless: arbitrary detentions, torture, and forced disappearances are the price many pay simply for practicing their faith, possessing images of the Dalai Lama, or expressing peaceful opinions.
Heartbreaking testimonies from those who have managed to escape, such as that of monk Palden Gyatso, who recounted the horrors he endured during 33 years in Chinese prisons in his book and in interviews with international organizations, reveal the magnitude of these violations. Organizations like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International continue to document recent cases, such as the death in custody of young monk Tenzin Nyima after a peaceful protest, and the imprisonment of Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen for giving voice to his people's aspirations in the documentary “Leaving Fear Behind.” State control over monasteries, restrictions on language, and mass surveillance have plunged Tibetan families into constant fear of their loved ones disappearing, with no access to justice or information.
If this repression continues with impunity, what is at stake is the very survival of one of the world’s most unique spiritual cultures. We will witness a cultural genocide that will deprive humanity of an invaluable legacy and set a dangerous precedent: that a state can systematically violate the human rights of a people without consequences. The persecution of Tibetan Buddhism is an affront to universal freedom of conscience and undermines the very principles upon which international human rights are built. Without urgent and concerted action, Tibet risks becoming a shadow of its former self, its spiritual and cultural essence suffocated. Change, driven by international pressure and global solidarity, can halt the suffering, open dialogue, and ensure a future where Tibetan peace and spirituality can flourish once again.
The time to act is now. Every day, more Tibetans face detention, torture, or disappearance. Recent reports of violations and the growing opacity of the Chinese government underscore the urgency, as highlighted by Human Rights Watch and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The international community has expressed concern, but much greater pressure is needed to force real change. This silent war rarely makes headlines, but its brutality is devastating.
Therefore, we call on:
The Chinese Government: To immediately end repression in Tibet, release all Tibetan prisoners of conscience, halt torture and forced disappearances, and allow the free exercise of Tibetan religion and culture.
The United Nations and its Member States: To actively investigate abuses, use all available diplomatic and human rights mechanisms to pressure China, and demand unrestricted access to Tibet for independent observers. More information on complaint procedures is available at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Buddhists, associations, and global citizens: Join this peaceful petition. Your signature is a powerful declaration of solidarity. Share this petition, inform others about the situation, and support organizations defending Tibetan human rights.
