Let's Stand in Solidarity with Filipino Farmers, Peasants, and Indigenous Communities!

The Issue

FIGHT FOR WHAT IS RIGHT!

The Philippines, an archipelago nation known for its abundant lands and vibrant agricultural heritage, is facing a crisis. For decades, Filipino farmers, peasants, and indigenous communities have been marginalized and exploited, their livelihoods threatened by systemic injustices and exploitative policies. We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with these resilient communities and demand urgent action to address their state.

Large corporations and powerful individuals continue to seize ancestral lands, displacing communities and destroying their way of life. These land grabs often result in environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, and the erosion of traditional knowledge.

Imagine working tirelessly in the fields, under the scorching sun, only to be offered a half for your hard-earned harvest. This is the reality for countless Filipino farmers, who are forced to sell their palay at prices that barely cover their costs.

The Philippines is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including extreme weather events and rising sea levels. Mainly, that Philippines is currently facing the center of the eye of the Super Typhoon "PEPITO" stated by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). These impacts disproportionately affect farmers and indigenous communities, who rely on the land for their survival.

Above all this, their demands for a fair wage and land rights are addressed with guns and militarization, and the hands that provide food for the Filipino people are criminalized. Along with this, KARAPATAN, an alliance of individuals, groups and organizations working for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Philippines stated that two-thirds or 59 out of the 87 victims of extrajudicial killings under the Marcos Jr. regime are farmers. Most of them were either red-tagged prior to their killing or were accused of being armed combatants in “false encounters.”

We cannot stand by and watch as our fellow Filipinos are robbed of their land, their dignity, and their future. We must act now!

Their struggles are a reflection of the systemic inequalities that torment our society. We, the Filipinos, must have immediate action to protect ancestral lands and ensure the rights of indigenous communities are respected. Moreover, land reform policies must be implemented to ensure equitable distribution of land and resources. Let us support local farmers and producers through fair pricing mechanisms and access to markets. The government policies should prioritize the needs of small-scale farmers and discourage exploitative practices by multinational corporations. Additionally, focusing on increased funding for research and development of sustainable farming practices, including organic farming, agroforestry, and climate-resilient agriculture. Thus, this will empower farmers to adapt to climate change and improve their livelihoods. Let us recognize the indigenous knowledge systems and their role in sustainable resource management. Let us support for indigenous communities to protect their ancestral lands and cultural heritage.

I urge all Filipinos and people of conscience around the world to join us in demanding justice for Filipino farmers, peasants, and indigenous communities.

Sign this petition today. Let your voice be heard. Let us stand together and demand justice for our farmers, peasants, and indigenous communities. Let us build a future where they are empowered, their rights are respected, and their voices are heard.

Together, we can make a difference.
