Let's include the "People's Marathon" at the 2028 LA Olympics
The Issue
Living in Los Angeles, a city renowned for its vibrant sports community and iconic landscapes, runners look forward to participating in events that truly brings our community together in celebration of sport and unity. The 2028 Summer Olympics, set to be hosted right here in our beautiful city, presents a unique opportunity to turn this dream into reality by holding a marathon for the general public during these Olympic Games.
Throughout Olympic history, marathons have been a symbol of endurance and unity. Incorporating a public marathon would not only embody these values but also foster a sense of community and global understanding. It offers an opportunity for runners of all backgrounds and skill levels to experience the thrill of crossing the same finish lines as Olympic athletes, further embedding the Olympic spirit into the fabric of Los Angeles.
Moreover, the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris successfully introduced the "Marathon for All" (Marathon Pour Tous), allowing amateur runners to experience the Olympic marathon course.
The logistics, while challenging, are feasible. As in Paris, the existing Olympic marathon route in Los Angeles should be adapted for the event by running in the evening, potentially following the men's Olympic marathon and preceding the women's race. A coordinated effort by local authorities, event organizers, and community volunteers can ensure safety and efficient logistics. With appropriate planning and execution, the public marathon at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics could continue what began in Paris in 2024, and set an example for future host cities.
Calling on the LA 2028 Organizing Committee, the IOC, and our city officials to earnestly consider this proposal, to promote an inclusive and community-centered event by adding a general public marathon. Let’s open the Olympic spirit to Angelenos, national and international visitors who wish to run the symbolic 26.2 miles for glory, health, and unity.
Please sign and share this petition to encourage these organizational committees to embrace this opportunity and to continue making history at the 2028 Olympic Games. Your signature can make a difference, let's run toward progress together!
