The Issue
In my community, we're witnessing a heartbreaking trend: an increasing number of our teens who desperately need rehabilitation support are not seeking it due to addiction and mental health challenges. This crisis is leading many of our young people into homelessness and a cycle of despair that is hard to break. As a parent, I am anguished to see these vibrant young lives slip away due to a lack of timely intervention and support.
In New Brunswick, Canada, the regulations around youth rehabilitation programs often require that teens must consent to their own treatment. Unfortunately, many teens struggling with addiction and mental health issues are not in a position to make those vital decisions themselves, either due to denial, fear, or inability to understand the full scope of their conditions. This results in countless missed opportunities to guide them back to safety and health.
Allowing parents or guardians to give consent for their underage children to receive rehabilitation could be a game-changer. It offers a supportive lifeline to those who are not yet ready to seek help on their own, ensuring that they receive the professional aid they need at a critical stage. Various studies have shown that early intervention in addiction and mental health issues can significantly improve outcomes, reducing the risk of chronic health problems and increasing the chances for a healthy adult life.
Statistics from the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction reveal that youth aged 15-24 have the highest rate of substance use disorders compared to any other age group in Canada. Furthermore, the mental health crisis among youth is escalating, with rising rates of depression and anxiety leading to increased vulnerability.
We appeal to our local government to amend the current consent laws regarding youth rehabilitation. By allowing parents to have a say in their teenager's rehabilitation journey, we can ensure more young people access essential services in times of critical need.
Join us in our fight to protect the youths of New Brunswick. By signing this petition, you can help us urge legislators to make a compassionate and necessary change, ensuring a safer and healthier future for our teens. Every signature counts towards a brighter tomorrow for our communities. Please sign and share this petition widely.
