Let Nest Thermostats Keep Working

Let Nest Thermostats Keep Working
The Issue
We have 10 Nest Gen 1 and Gen 2 thermostats. Our experience with the Google Gen 3 models was far from ideal; they were not as user-friendly and demanded a Google account for operation. Understanding that Google may no longer want to host the cloud service for these earlier models, we believe there is no reason why they shouldn't allow users to host their own cloud solutions for remote control.
Google's recent announcement to phase out cloud support for the first and second-generation Nest thermostats in October 2025 has raised significant concerns. These devices, still in perfect working condition, will be cut off from remote control functionalities. This decision not only incurs additional costs for consumers who are forced to upgrade but also contributes unnecessarily to the growing e-waste problem, a pressing issue we cannot ignore.
The demand for a self-hosted or local API solution from Google comes from a place of necessity and environmental responsibility. Allowing users to maintain basic functionalities without relying on Google's cloud infrastructure would extend the life of these devices, reduce e-waste, and empower consumers to have more control over their technology.
Not all users are ready or willing to upgrade to the newer models, especially when their existing devices meet their needs perfectly. The Gen 1 and Gen 2 thermostats have served us well, and in many cases, better than their successors. We respectfully urge Google to consider this local control option, which aligns with their ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness.
Every voice counts in making this important change happen. If you own a Gen 3 or Gen 4 thermostat, Google will eventually end of life these also. Help Stand with us in asking Google to provide a solution that respects both our investments and the environment. Sign this petition to show your support.
