Let Kids be Kids. Stop HB49.
The Issue
House Bill 49 is part of a disturbing trend across the country aimed at reducing the safeguards specifically designed to protect minors in the workplace. Florida is the 16th state to consider such legislation, and notably, the 13th in the year 2023 alone.
Current Florida law prohibits employers from scheduling 16 and 17-year-olds for more than eight hours per day on school nights or over 30 hours a week while school is in session. These limitations are essential to protect the physical safety and mental well-being of minors, affording them the necessary time for education and personal development. HB 49 threatens to unravel these protections.
If passed, HB 49 would grant employers the authority to schedule minors for unrestricted work hours, including overnight shifts during the school year.
This measure raises significant concerns about the potential harm it could have on the lives of Florida’s children. Sanctioning extended work hours, especially during late evenings and early mornings, poses a substantial threat to the academic success and overall well-being of teenagers. This legislation inadvertently heightens the risk of mental health issues, substance abuse, and workplace injuries among youth. Additionally, it is crucial to acknowledge the potential disparate impact on students from low-income families, who often depend on employment to support their households. This legislation may compel them to work unsustainable hours, further intensifying existing inequalities.
Join us in signing this petition to protect Florida's youth from the potential harmful consequences of House Bill 49. Together, let’s advocate for policies that prioritize the well-being and balanced development of teens. Your support can make a meaningful difference and ensure we let kids be kids.
