Petition to the Sutter County Superior Court
This petition is respectfully addressed to the Honorable Judicial Officer assigned to 13-year-old Jaxon Jay Lenz's family law case in the Sutter County Superior Court. We respectfully ask that, when considering Jaxon's best interests, the Court give meaningful consideration to Jaxon's own repeatedly expressed wish to attend Redwood Seventh-day Adventist Campmeeting from July 24 through August 1, 2026. For Jaxon, Campmeeting is not simply a vacation—it is a cherished annual tradition that has been part of his life since he was 11 months old, providing him with spiritual growth, family connection, lifelong friendships, and a sense of belonging within his faith community.
This is about far more than one week at camp.
It is about a child's voice.
Since he was just 11 months old, Jaxon has attended Redwood Campmeeting every summer. It is where he worships, studies the Bible, participates in youth activities, spends time with his grandparents, extended family, church family, and lifelong friends, and continues the faith that has shaped his life.
Jaxon is a baptized member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Campmeeting is not simply a vacation—it is an important part of his faith, identity, and childhood.
Last year, he was unable to attend. This year, he has again expressed his sincere desire to return.
As children grow, they develop their own beliefs, values, friendships, and traditions. Their voices deserve to be heard. Their sincerely held wishes should not be dismissed simply because they are children.
The First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the free exercise of religion, and Article I, Section 4 of the California Constitution guarantees the free exercise and enjoyment of religion. California law also recognizes that, when appropriate, courts should consider the wishes of children who are mature enough to express them.
This petition is not about deciding custody or assigning blame to either parent.
It is about supporting one child's opportunity to continue a lifelong religious tradition, practice his faith, spend meaningful time with his family and church community, and have his voice thoughtfully considered.
