The Issue

I am writing this petition to bring attention to an issue that is very close to me. I have witnessed a compassionate and intelligent student, who had the courage to stand up for human rights, face an overwhelming situation simply for planning a peaceful school walk-out. This student, along with their peers in the Iredell School System, wanted to exercise their right to protest injustices and support civil liberties without fear of severe repercussions. When they took the responsible step to discuss the planned walk-out with school officials, they were met not with understanding, but with intimidation—a room filled with school district members, the superintendent, a police officer, and a school resource officer, who threatened them with Out-Of-School Suspension (OSS).

This action not only discourages free speech but also places a stain on the students' records, potentially affecting their future education opportunities. Iredell School System's current stance on student protests stifles the students' right to peacefully advocate for social change and gain valuable experience in civic engagement. This is not just detrimental to the students involved; it sends a dangerous message that peaceful protest and advocating for justice is something to be punished.

Students should be able to express their beliefs and support or protest causes important to them without fear of damaging their academic record or future prospects. It is crucial to strike a balance between maintaining order in schools and allowing students to engage politically in a responsible and respectful manner.

We are urging the Iredell School System to revise its policies to support students' rights to peaceful assembly and protest. Such policies should include clear guidelines on the organization of protests, which allow students to be involved in social and political issues actively, without punitive consequences that threaten their educational journey.

The fear of having permanent disciplinary actions on their records for engaging in civil protests can deter students from speaking out against wrongdoings and championing for change. School is not just a place for academic growth, but also a breeding ground for leaders of tomorrow. Our students should be encouraged, not discouraged, from expressing their views in a mature and responsible way.

Let's stand together for the next generation of change-makers in Iredell. Let us challenge the school system to foster an environment where students are inspired to stand up for what's right, without fear. We need your support to bring about this crucial change. Please sign this petition to help protect our students' rights to peaceful protest and their future. Thank you for your support.

This is completely false. We provided our students a safe way to make know their concerns within a safe context of our school environment. In today's society in is apparent fringe groups on both sides want to politicize current issues without always knowing the cost. Once a student leaves our campus we cannot nor are liable for their safety. It should be clearly apparent with the tax dollars we spend on safety on our grounds means we care about their safety. Leaving class is a safety issue for any reason. We control and observe halls and other areas to prevent potential violence. While this group had no intention to do so, what prevents someone to take advantage of this and do harm. In addition, the clamor around this had potential and concerns from law enforcement of an outside group our persons to do harm. Bottom line, we will do all we can to protect or students, teach them how to make your voice known and not fall to the whims of the current political issues in our nation.
