The Issue

For over 50 years, the New York Road Runners Mini 10K has been cherished as a race that celebrates women in the sport of running. It's an iconic event that empowers women of all ages and highlights their strength, determination, and resilience. Unfortunately, in 2025, the NYRR decision to shorten the Girls Run Stage 2 distance to a half-mile was a step back from these values, especially when SIX other co-ed Stage 2 races continue to be a full mile distance.

When we reached out to the New York Road Runners youth program about this decision, they responded by saying “A little more than three years ago we observed that 8 to 11-year-olds (regardless of gender) in our Stage 2 events were having some challenges running the one-mile distance: many were not completing the distance; with most of them walking after the first 400 meters.” This is unequivocally untrue. Yes, some kids do struggle, but to say MANY do not finish and MOST of them walk is an unfair statement. However, the recent 2026 Times Square Run and upcoming 2026 Boardwalk Kids Run Stage 2 events, both co-ed, retained their full mile distance.  NYRR's motto is “Believe In Every Step,” so we ask them to stand behind those words by believing in the future of girls in sport.

The decision to reduce the distance not only undermines the spirit of celebrating female athletes but also sends a discouraging message to young girls across the nation. If girls can successfully complete a mile in co-ed events, surely they deserve the same opportunity in a race specifically designed to honor and empower them!

Participating in a longer distance race like the full mile presents the perfect opportunity for girls to push their limits and experience the pride of finishing the same challenge their male counterparts face. It empowers them to break barriers and unlock their potential in an environment designed to celebrate their achievements.

The full mile is more than just a distance; it symbolizes equality, achievement, and the celebration of female athleticism.  By reinstating the full mile at the Girls Run, NYRR will once again demonstrate their commitment to fostering a supportive and inspiring environment for young female runners.

Join us in urging the New York Road Runners to reconsider their decision and bring back the full mile for the 2026 Girls Run. Let’s show our commitment to this cause and ensure that every girl has the chance to run "the extra mile"!
