Let Edison Residents Use Our Publicly Funded High School Tennis Courts!

Let Edison Residents Use Our Publicly Funded High School Tennis Courts!
The Issue
Edison taxpayers have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to build and maintain high school tennis courts — including six brand‑new, lighted courts at J.P. Stevens High School — yet these facilities remain locked year‑round except for school use.
This is not the norm. Many neighboring towns — including Metuchen, Flemington, Middlesex, Hillsborough, Millburn, Watchung Hills, and Colonia — open their high school courts to residents outside of school hours. Edison should do the same.
Why This Matters:
• We paid for them. These courts were built with our tax dollars.
• They promote health and community. Tennis is a lifelong sport that encourages fitness, social connection, and youth development.
• They’re sitting unused. Locked courts mean wasted potential and poor return on public investment.
Our Request:
We call on the Edison Board of Education to reconsider and repeal its current policy and practice of restricting public access to these courts, and to adopt a simple, responsible use policy:
• Open courts during non‑school hours, weekends, and school breaks
• Post clear rules for use
• Require a “Carry In, Carry Out” policy so all players remove their own trash
• Keep priority for school programs
Let’s make sure our public facilities serve the public. Sign this petition to tell the Edison BOE it’s time to unlock our courts and give residents the access they deserve.
