Let Colorado Voters Choose a Fairer Tax System

Let Colorado Voters Choose a Fairer Tax System
The Issue
For decades, Colorado has used a flat income tax system that treats teachers and millionaires exactly the same. That might sound simple—but it's not fair. It puts an outsized burden on working families while letting the wealthiest Coloradans pay far less than their share. Meanwhile, our schools, health care programs, and child care systems continue to fall short—not because Coloradans don’t care, but because the state keeps running out of money to fund them.
Now, we have a chance to fix it.
A coalition of community groups has proposed a ballot measure that would finally ask the wealthiest Coloradans—those making over $500,000 a year—to contribute more, while actually lowering taxes for most people. The new system would bring in an estimated $2.3 billion every year, helping fund education, health care, child care, and other vital services across the state.
Before this idea can even make it onto the 2026 ballot, it has to pass a long list of hurdles: approval from the Colorado Title Board, signature gathering, and more. Opponents—including well-funded political organizations and lobbyists—are already lining up to kill the idea before voters ever get a say.
That’s why we’re raising our voices now.
We’re calling on the Colorado Title Board and state leaders to let this proposal move forward—and let the people decide. Coloradans deserve the chance to vote on a tax system that reflects our values: fairness, opportunity, and shared responsibility.
If you believe the wealthiest should pay their fair share—and that our state’s future is worth investing in—add your name. Let’s show there’s already public support for a more just tax system in Colorado.
