The Issue

We, the undersigned parents, coaches, and community members, respectfully request the City of Carson to revise its current mandatory draft system used for youth sports team formation.

While we support fairness and inclusivity in all city programs, we believe the current system undermines player development and discourages quality volunteer coaches. The forced reshuffling of rosters each season eliminates consistency and mentorship, leading to diminished participation, less skill progression, and fewer practices overall.

We propose a revised approach that allows:

Returning coaches to retain a portion of their prior season’s players (e.g., 5 per season)
More autonomy at the park level to tailor team building
Volunteer coaches with good evaluations to continue building their teams
This flexibility will enhance player confidence, foster community bonds, and ensure that youth athletes continue to thrive in a positive, structured environment.

We urge the Carson Parks & Recreation Department and City Council to adopt a more balanced and development-focused team formation policy.
