Let Canadians Bring Their Own Belongings Home Without Paying Tariffs

The Issue

Imagine being charged hundreds of dollars to get back something that already belongs to you.

That’s exactly what happened to us.

After a short trip to the U.S., we realized we had accidentally left behind a ring—one that had been in my husband’s possession for over 20 years. It wasn’t new. It wasn’t a gift. It was his. It was ours. We even used it as one of our wedding rings.

His godmother found it and mailed it back to us with $500 insurance. But when it arrived in Canada, CBSA demanded we pay tariffs and taxes to receive it. We provided a dated wedding photo showing the ring, but they said it wasn’t enough proof.

This isn’t just about one ring. It’s about a policy that doesn’t make sense.

Canadians should not have to pay to bring their own belongings home.

We’re asking CBSA and the Government of Canada to:

Recognize dated photos, insurance records, and sworn affidavits as valid proof of prior ownership.

Create a clear, accessible process for Canadians to reclaim personal items without unnecessary fees.

Educate border agents and postal customs officers on how to fairly assess returning personal effects.

This policy affects travelers, students, families, and anyone who’s ever forgotten something abroad. It’s time for a change.

Sign this petition if you believe Canadians deserve the right to reclaim what’s already theirs—without paying for it twice.
