Let Bengaluru Breathe: Save Our Green Lungs 🌳💚
The Issue
Bengaluru, known as the Garden City of India, now faces an imminent threat that hits close to home for me and many others who cherish its verdant corners. As a resident who has spent countless afternoons under the cool shades of Cubbon Park and Lalbagh, hearing the songs of birds amidst the bustling city sounds, I am saddened by the rapid depletion of our green cover.
In recent years, Bengaluru's green spaces have been under constant threat from unchecked urban development. Reports indicate that Bengaluru has lost over 78% of its urban green cover within the last four decades, significantly affecting air quality and climate within the city. Without immediate action, the city that was once known for its gardens might soon become an urban jungle of concrete, devoid of the natural beauty that defines it.
A study by the Indian Institute of Science highlights that Bengaluru’s temperature has risen by approximately 2-2.5°C over the past five years, attributed primarily to the diminishing green cover. This loss not only contributes to warming but also exacerbates air pollution, with the city ranking among the worst in air quality across India. The WHO identifies cities with reduced green spaces as more susceptible to health issues, including respiratory diseases.
Bengaluru’s greenery is more than just a natural resource; it is the heart and soul of our community, offering solace, recreation, and a haven for biodiversity. It has health benefits, providing cleaner air, better mental health, and a sense of peace. Our parks and green belts play a crucial role as the city's lungs, filtering pollutants and refreshing the air we breathe. For future generations, preserving these spaces ensures a quality of life that we have cherished.
We need a collective effort to advocate for sustainable urban planning that includes not only the conservation but also the expansion of our green spaces. This can be achieved by implementing strict regulations on deforestation, promoting afforestation initiatives, and integrating green belts into urban development projects. It is also essential to involve local communities in the decision-making processes, allowing us to protect and maintain our beloved parks and green zones.
Join me in urging the local government, urban planners, and environmental agencies to prioritize the preservation of Bengaluru's green spaces. Let us come together to save our city’s natural heritage and secure a healthier, greener future for all residents. Sign this petition to show your support for Bengaluru's green lung preservation!
