We, the students and alumni of Baruch College, are advocating for the inclusion of a walking component at commencement ceremonies.

For many of us students, Graduation is more than just an event. It is a defining milestone that represents years of hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. For many students, especially first-generation college students, the opportunity to walk across the stage and hear their name called is a deeply meaningful moment shared with their families and loved ones. Currently, Baruch’s commencement ceremony does not include individual recognition through a stage walk. While the ceremony celebrates students collectively, it lacks the personal acknowledgment that many students value and expect after completing their degrees.

Other colleges, including fellow CUNY institutions, have found ways to incorporate walking ceremonies even with large graduating classes. This demonstrates that it is possible to create a more meaningful and inclusive experience without compromising logistics.

We are not asking for an unrealistic change we are asking for a thoughtful and meaningful improvement that will have a lasting impact for all students. Options such as multiple ceremonies, school-based graduations, or an additional optional walking event could provide students with the opportunity to be recognized individually. This change would enhance the student experience, strengthen the connection between students and the institution, and ensure that Baruch graduates receive the recognition they deserve.

We respectfully urge Baruch College administration to explore and implement a solution that allows students the opportunity to walk at graduation.
