Let Asylum Seekers In — Don’t Let the Supreme Court Bring Back the Turnback Policy
The Issue
The U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing whether the government can turn away asylum seekers at the border before they even step onto U.S. soil.
If they rule in favor of this “turnback” policy, it would set a dangerous precedent — and put thousands of vulnerable people at risk.
Under federal law, people fleeing violence or persecution have the legal right to request asylum at ports of entry — official border crossings.
But during Donald Trump’s first term, the government began a policy called “metering,” where border agents simply blocked asylum seekers from stepping foot into the U.S. This meant they were never given the chance to apply, even if they waited for hours or days.
Now, that same policy is being challenged in court — and the outcome could affect future administrations. The Trump administration argues it should be legal to deny people their rights just because they haven’t crossed an invisible line.
That’s not what America stands for.
We’re calling on the U.S. Supreme Court and elected leaders to:
- Reject the return of the turnback policy (“metering”)
- Uphold the legal right to seek asylum at all official ports of entry
- Prevent future administrations from denying asylum seekers access to due process.
People fleeing war, persecution, and violence have every right to request protection under U.S. law — and they should be treated with dignity, not blocked at the door.
Sign now if you believe asylum is a human right — and turning people away before they can ask for help is wrong.
