Let 200 students stay in the Student Experience Zuidas

The Issue

In February 2026 the Student Experience building in Zuid announced an extension of the land lease given by the municipality — originally the building was supposed to be demolished in 2026, but now it is going to stay until June 2027. As 800 students celebrated, more than 200 of them received an email from SE, claiming that due to tenant protection laws their contracts could not be extended. While people living there for more than a year had indefinite contracts, those who moved in after October 2024 had temporary contracts. The law prohibits giving tenants consecutive temporary contracts. The moment a second temporary contract is given, it automatically becomes indefinite, which is not SE's best interest.

SE claims they care about the international student community, but clearly not enough to let people stay. If nothing changes, hundreds of people are going to be left homeless. Weeks ago tenants presented a feasible legal proposal for an extension, which protects both tenants' and SE's rights. SE is yet to respond despite promising to answer within 2 weeks, which already has passed. SE has shown they don't care about the hundreds of tenants living there, prioritising profit and laziness, over those who they claim to care about.

Hereby we ask you to sign this petition, protect tenants rights in the Netherlands, and show your support for the international students community.
